Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
The UK’s new EPR scheme requires businesses to take greater responsibility for packaging waste. Companies must register, report packaging data, and pay fees based on the amount and type of packaging they use.
Who Is Affected?
Any business that supplies packaged goods to the UK market, handles more than 50 tonnes of packaging annually, or has a turnover exceeding ยฃ2 million must comply. This includes manufacturers, importers, and online retailers.
Plastic Packaging Tax
Since April 2023, plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled content is subject to taxation. The rate is ยฃ200 per tonne, encouraging businesses to switch to recycled alternatives.
Compliance Deadlines
Key dates to remember: EPR registration opened in January 2024, with first data submissions due by April 2025. Late compliance can result in significant fines and reputational damage.
How to Prepare
Audit your current packaging, identify recycled content alternatives, and establish systems for data collection and reporting. Many businesses are partnering with compliance schemes to manage these obligations.
